I have had the privilege of getting to know Mark and his family personally and serve alongside them, which by seeing who they are and what they carry, only adds weight to the message of this book. They are living what they preach, and are always pressing on for more. This is a timely book, relevant message and a must read for anyone who needs a fresh vision of what God is building in this day through His people - Kingdom Churches!
I really enjoyed this book because Mark lays out some good theology but is also very practical with regard to building churches with sustainable DNA. He covers a range of topics (including some "hot-button" ones) that bring better understanding to the issues of leadership, governmental structure, ecclesiology. I especially loved sections like "Lower Still", and "The Interdependent Church". Highly recommended!!!!
Thorough and scripturally based, this book presents a convincing case for spiritual revival in the Western church. For members and leaders in all Western churches, as well as for the unchurched, this explication of God's power to move his people out of a dead faith and into a living community of followers is insightful, hopeful, and passionate. It is well written and will grip you on both an academic and spiritual level.
I've been reading this book and several of the author's statements have resonated with me. The author paints a picture of church that has grown stagnant. Internally we seem to be doing something with all our big time productions to "ooh" and "ah" the crowds. The church needs to get back to focusing on prayer, back to relational ministry as spiritual mentors to a world hungry for something that can change their lives.
As the author puts it, "The church is a hospital, to be sure. But that hospital is a MASH unit, not a gated retirement center!" Time is short for today's generation. We must be prepared with a spiritual triage to quickly bind the wounds of as many as we can before they perish.
It connects the dots of what is The Kingdom of God NOW! It is quite a contrast from much of the touchy-feely Christianity that gets preached today. Perry lays out a compelling, comprehensive vision of the nature of the kingdom of God and Jesus as the king of that kingdom. I recommend this book because it addresses a couple of concepts that were lost very early on in the historical development of Christianity - the kingdom of God and seeking first the kingdom of God. It is a practical book that calls Christians to commit all to the advancement of the Kingdom of God.
As young adult, I have know what it means to feel insecure, especially in a "Church" setting. However, this book has helped me to look at my situation with a different perspective. It has helped me to step back and evaluate my position from the view point of the victim, to that of a game maker. Why? For the reason that I, as many others have been called. We have been called into to step out of our norms and walk in freedom. That comes from having a heavenly mindset that is secure in who we are. As I read Kingdom Churches the things that have stood out to me, were the tools to discovering the areas in my life that have set me back from finding my place in the family of Christ, known as the "Church." One thing I would recommend is to have an open mindset and a ready spirit to be ready to receive spiritual truths that are backed with the word of God, and that will also shake your ground. For it is when our foundation is shaken, that we will began to see the areas of our lives which have been built with gold and frankincense and precious jewels, stand up to the challenge and call of our beautiful savior.
Amazing book. Mark gives a great review of a number of the systemic problems facing the church in the West. However, unlike many books that do this, he actually focuses on solutions, rather than bashing the church. He presents a great antidote to shallow church growth mentality. The optimistic tone refreshed me.
In this book, Mark expertly straddles the line between structure and spontaneity, organization and family, group and individual. I highly suggest the book just for the balanced point of view on these tensions. A good read for anybody but an especially good read for pastors and leaders in the church.
Keep exclaiming the kingdom, Mark!
This is not just some handbook of boring information.
In one sentence This book is not primarily about strategies or methods, but about finding God on a deeper level.
The strategies are just tools to do that.
What I appreciate most about this book is its tone. It is devoid of a critical, judgmental approach to "other ways" of doing church life. It is informative, yet personal; intelligently presented, yet profoundly humble. Each chapter is a deep challenge--a challenge, by the grace of God, to go deeper, run harder, and love more than you've ever done before! The chapters are chock-full of scriptures to chew on, as well.
I am one of those people who has experienced the best and the worst of church life. It has answered so many questions that I have had about church, even the questions I didn't know were questions in my heart until I read the answer! And it answered the questions in such a way as to provoke me to love the church more rather than give me more bullets to shoot at the Western church.
May I give you a suggestion? Read it!
